Patterns: area of a triangle

What can geometry be used for?

During their education, young people often ask themselves the question: "Will I ever need this?”. Particularly in the sciences, and especially in mathematics, this is often the case as this area of science usually causes them the most problems. If they see the title ‘area of a triangle’ in a textbook, they do not realise how useful it can be.

Calculating and applying the area of a triangle

The area of a triangle can be calculated using various formulas, depending on the type of figure and the data available. There are, for example, equilateral triangles, right-angled triangles and isosceles triangles. The simplest way to calculate the area is to multiply the length of the base (the side on which the height falls) by the height of the triangle and then divide the product by two.

More advanced formulas for the area of a triangle may also include various trigonometric functions, as well as the radius of the circle inscribed or circumscribed on the triangle. Despite appearances, using the area formulas for triangles is not difficult and can have many applications in everyday life.

When planning a renovation, for example, geometry can easily calculate the area of the floor tiles needed. All that is needed is the dimensions of the room and the formula for the area of the corresponding geometrical figure. Mathematics is also of great importance in the technology sector. Without it, engineers would not be able to design a house, a bridge or any other complex structure.
